Music is vibrant at QEHS, with the focus being on creating music of a high standard which involves as many students as possible. The ensembles we currently run are Orchestra, Concert Band, Swing Band, Choir, Chamber Choir and Soul Band, plus a range of smaller ensembles run by the staff and students, such as Flute Choir and Ukulele Club. New starters join Junior Band after a term of lessons. Many students play more than one instrument in school, and there are many students who have private lessons outside school and take part in school ensembles.
We run GCSE and A Level Music courses and are well resourced as a department, with a suite of computers with both Sibelius and Cubase, a range of music practice rooms, a class set of djembe, a full samba kit and a set of steel pans. We hold ABRSM Practical Exams each term at school and can also book Trinity Exams to be taken at Lincoln Music Centre. We also offer ABRSM Theory Classes after school throughout the year, and we offer an ABRSM Theory Exam Day most terms, depending on demand. Students who have private lessons can also take their ABRSM Exams at school if this is more convenient.
We put on two main concerts each year with all school ensembles (Christmas and Spring). The Choirs and senior instrumentalists are also invited to take part in the annual “Carols For All” celebration at Gainsborough All Saints’ Church in mid-December with Gainsborough Choral Society and Lincoln Pro Musica.
Other music performances include charity concerts both in and out of school, local festivals, and events organised by Lincolnshire Music Service. We also stage numerous small recitals through the school year, including Piano Recital, Junior and Senior Recitals, and the Guitar and Drum Recital. Year 7s put on their own musical production each year (for example, Lion King, Aladdin, or Beauty and the Beast), which ensures that they are excited by and involved in music right from their early days in the school. House Music is a student-run event which takes place in February. The Music Department also offers students the opportunity to take their Bronze Arts Award qualification.
The whole-school production takes place in the Summer Term; recent productions include Wizard of Oz, Legally Blonde and West Side Story, staged at Trinity Arts Centre, Gainsborough.
Instrumental and Singing Lessons
As well as our own Music teaching staff, we are well supported by almost a dozen peripatetic staff from the Lincolnshire Music Service (LMS), who also take part in school performances and regularly support our students in concerts and exam preparation. At QEHS, students can learn:
- Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass
- Acoustic, Electric and Bass Guitar
- Trumpet, Trombone, Horn and Tuba
- Oboe and Bassoon
- Alto, Tenor and Soprano Sax
- Church Organ (for piano students of Grade 4 or above)
The Music Market is an exciting annual event, usually held in the Summer Term as part of the Welcome to our new Year 7 students. As with so many things recently, we have been unable to invite you to share this fantastic experience. If you would like to view our new Percussion YouTube Video, please click here.
- To book Church Organ please use the separate booking form available here and for Percussion Lessons use the form here.
- For Singing and all other Instrumental Lessons, please apply via the Lincolnshire Music Service booking portal:
This enables you to create an online account where you can pay for lessons and instrument hire and access information such as timetables, teacher’s comments and attendance records. For more information, please read further LMS guidance here.
If you have any queries about instrumental or singing lessons at QEHS, please email: email@example.com.
Instruments in school
If your child is bringing an instrument to school, it must have a QEHS name tag on the case. Please fill in the form found here and email it to firstname.lastname@example.org and the Music Department will create a tag for your child’s instrument case.
