Music

Music is vibrant at QEHS, with the focus being on creating music of a high standard which involves as many students as possible. The ensembles we currently run are Orchestra, Concert Band, Swing Band, Choir, Chamber Choir and Soul Band, plus a range of smaller ensembles run by the staff and students, such as Flute Choir and Ukulele Club. New starters join Junior Band after a term of lessons. Many students play more than one instrument in school, and there are many students that have private lessons outside school, who also take part in school ensembles.

We are well supported by almost a dozen peripatetic staff from the Lincolnshire Music Service (LMS), who also take part in school performances and regularly support our students in concerts and exam preparation. At QEHS, students can learn:

  • Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass
  • Singing
  • Acoustic, Electric and Bass Guitar
  • Percussion
  • Trumpet, Trombone, Horn and Tuba
  • Recorders (all)
  • Oboe and Bassoon
  • Alto, Tenor and Soprano Sax
  • Clarinet
  • Flute
  • Piano and Church Organ (for students of Grade 4 piano or above)

Lessons are provided by teachers from the Lincolnshire Music Service (LMS) or by our own music staff, and roughly 20% of students take lessons in school.

We run GCSE and A-Level Music courses and are well resourced as a department, with a suite of computers with both Sibelius and Cubase, a range of music practice rooms, a class set of djembe, a full samba kit and a set of steel pans. We hold ABRSM and Trinity College London Practical exams at school. Students who have private lessons can also take their exams at school if this is more convenient. We also offer ABRSM Theory classes after school throughout the year, and we offer an ABRSM Theory exam day most terms, depending on demand.

We put on two main concerts per year with all school ensembles (Christmas and Spring), and House Music is a student-run event taking place in February. The Choirs and senior instrumentalists are also invited to take part in the annual “Carols For All” celebration in Gainsborough All Saints’ Church in mid-December with Gainsborough Choral Society and Lincoln Pro Musica. Other music performances include charity concerts both in and out of school, local festivals, and events organised by Lincolnshire Music Service. We also stage numerous small recitals through the school year, including Piano Recital, Junior and Senior Recitals, and the Guitar and Drum Recital. Year 7’s put on their own musical production each year (for example, Lion King, Aladdin, or Beauty and the Beast), which ensures that they are excited by and involved in music right from their early days in the school.  The Music Department also offers students the opportunity to take their Bronze Arts Award qualification.

The whole school production takes place in the Summer Term; recent productions include Wizard of Oz and Legally Blonde, staged at Trinity Arts Centre, Gainsborough.

Lesson Applications

Please read the general notes and guidance in the lesson booking form. This explains how the lessons are implemented at QEHS and gives information on fee remission, cancelling lessons, instrument hire, school ensembles etc. There are fee remissions for Free School Meals, Pupil Premium, Ever6 and Service Families. You can apply for lessons on more than one instrument, but if you are claiming any fee remission, this applies to the first instrument only; you pay the standard rate for subsequent instruments. We assume that you are applying for a year of lessons, and you will be invoiced termly unless you give us one term’s notice of your wish to cancel. Please indicate on the application form if you need to hire an instrument, as this can be arranged for a very modest charge through Lincolnshire Music Service.

We will only contact you if there is a problem with your lesson application. Weekly lesson timetables are published online and on the noticeboard in the Music Department, and new starters will be given full information during the first week of term.

If you have any queries about filling in the application form, please call and ask to speak to the Music Office.
